Archive for January, 2009

The dates have been set for these fun FREE Urban Sessions! I am going to hold two rather than one full day. Location will be downtown Raleigh to be determined (it may be different for each day).

Saturday, February 21st 3:00pm, 4:00pm or 5:00pm
Sunday, March 8th, 3:00pm, 4:00pm or 5:00pm

I have a few school age children that will be great, but could still use one or two more models – particularly teenagers or preteens! These sessions will be fun, and funky! Wear bright colors, bold clothes, plenty of fun layers, hats, scarves, boots, and think funky!

Please see this post for more details and contact me right away if you’re interested:

People always ask how I capture their child’s personality and get such natural expressions. It’s all about connecting and interacting, rather than directing. If your child gets camera shy, talk while snapping. You can even move the camera away from your face so they can see you! Make a funny face, a loud noise or even get close enough that you can tickle! Interacting with your child will help make the experience positive, and elicit some natural, rather than forced, smiles! Get down on their level (yes, that means squat! Photographing your kids can be a good workout!) and just talk to them rather than saying, “Ok, smile for the camera”! Avoid the “Cheeeeeese Face”!

Sweet, Sweet Baby

One of my favorite things about running a half price newborn special is that I get so be around so many sweet babies all winter! And, this little one was incredibly sweet! And so was her big sister. Everytime she was near the baby she just wanted to kiss her…

Of course, Daddy just wanted to kiss her too! Again, so sweet…

This wedding was photographed by my FABULOUS Associate Photographer, Robert! Clients have highly praised his work and his professionalism. He is also prompt, and gets images online right away. I am very lucky to have him! Summer and Wes were married at one of my favorite spots – The JC Raulston Arboretum.

Preparation
I have my clients prepare a list of special people and groups they would like to have photographs of or with prior to the wedding day. Over the years, I have had brides ask if I have a checklist that they can use. I have contemplated making one, but I have found that having brides actually think it through and write down the names of important family and friends helps in two ways. First, it give me more information than just checking a box, such as the person’s name and relationship. Second, if the bride creates such a list, it helps get all the right people in the right place at the right time, which is key to getting the portraits done! I also assure clients that this list doesn’t limit us, if other opportunities arrise while we are doing portraits, of course we can go with the flow. A rough schedule of how the day will flow is also very helpful in both getting everyone where they need to be and helping me anticipate what comes next. Again, when even the best laid plans get a little off, I am definitely able to go with it and get us back on track!
